Penybont vs Goytre – Revenge or Repeat?

At the Kymco stadium in Bridgend, 3rd place Penybont play host to 6th place Goytre. Separated by just 1 point, the two sides will certainly not be playing for a draw. Both are fairly formidable teams and are good enough to be in contention for the title, but will they be able to keep up with the likes of Llanelli Town and Haverfordwest West? You feel that this is the type of match where a win would be a massive statement. Penybont will be looking for revenge after losing 3 – 0 in the reverse fixture.  It is for that reason that this contest should be very entertaining.

Penybont have scored 33 goals in the league this season, which is the lowest of all of the top 8 teams. However they find themselves 3rd with 28 points. Furthermore they have 3 games in hand on 4th place Cambrian & Clydach, putting them in a comfortable position.

Penybont have been in great form recently, winning 5 of their last 6 games. The reverse fixture saw Penybont come away from Plough Road empty handed and embarrassed. Since that 3-0 loss their form has risen dramatically and they will hope for revenge when Goytre visit their turf.

The visitors are in a similar situation where they have games in hand on teams above and below and see themselves as title rivals. Goytre have scored 36 goals this season, 23 of which have come from Luke Prosser and Dan McDonald. Adding to their attacking threat, is a solid defense. They have only conceded 21 goals this season which is the 3rd lowest of any team.

Interestingly, Goytre are the only team to have not drawn a game this season. Does that mean there will be a winner? Similarly to Penybont, Carl Evans’ side have won 5 of their last 6 games but have only played three games in the last two months. This surely irritates their form. This was proved in their last match which was against Briton Ferry – they lost 3 – 1. Nevertheless, this game is still hard to call, and with both teams wanting a win to prove a point, this should be well contested.

Kick off at 2pm Saturday 6th January 2018
